Docker vs Podman in 2026: Which Should You Use?

An in-depth comparison of Docker and Podman. Learn why the shift to daemonless, rootless containers is critical for Linux security.

For years, Docker was synonymous with containers. But in enterprise Linux environments, a powerful alternative has taken hold: Podman.

The Case for Podman

Podman fixes the two biggest architectural flaws of Docker:

  • Daemonless: Docker relies on a massive, central daemon running as root. If the daemon crashes, all containers go down. Podman forks and executes containers directly; there is no central point of failure.
  • Rootless by Default: Podman is designed to run containers as standard, unprivileged users. If an attacker escapes a rootless container, they are still just an unprivileged user on the host system, neutralizing the threat.
  • Systemd Integration: Podman integrates natively with systemd. You can generate `.service` files for your containers and manage them exactly like native Linux services.

Because the CLI commands are identical (just alias docker=podman), migrating is usually trivial. If security is a priority, Podman is the clear choice.
